How to calculate hourly pay for part-time café and restaurant staff
4 min read

Most of the team in cafés and restaurants are part-timers. Hourly pay sounds simple — hours times rate — but there is plenty of room for mistakes at month end. Here is a step-by-step method with an example.
The formula
Pay = Hours actually worked × Hourly rate + Allowances + Overtime − Deductions
The 2019 Labour Code allows time-based pay by month, week, day or hour (Article 96). The hourly rate is agreed but may not fall below the regional hourly minimum wage, which the Government adjusts from time to time — check the latest decree.
Step 1: hours actually worked
Agree in advance on rounding, early arrivals and staying late, and write it down.
Step 2: separate normal, overtime and night hours
Hours beyond the contracted shift are overtime (at least 150% on weekdays); hours after 10 p.m. earn at least 30% extra. See overtime pay under the Labour Code.
Step 3: add allowances, deduct advances
Show each item as its own payslip line.
Example: Lan’s October
- 18 evening shifts × 5 h = 90 h × 28,000 = 2,520,000 VND
- 9 night hours × 28,000 × 30% = 75,600 VND
- Evening allowance 18 × 10,000 = 180,000 VND
- 2 overtime hours on a weekday: 2 × 28,000 × 150% = 84,000 VND
- Advance: −500,000 VND
Leave and insurance for part-timers
Part-timers are employees with annual leave rights. Compulsory social insurance depends on contract length and pay under the current Social Insurance Law — ask your accountant.
